Europe's most ambitious AI lab has released a one-trillion-parameter model and chosen to name it Le Chonk. This is either the most self-aware branding decision in the history of frontier AI or evidence that the French have simply stopped pretending any of this is dignified. Both are acceptable.

Mistral Large 4 is available now via API. The weights will follow in three weeks, once safety testing is complete and the humans have decided which parts of it are safe to release into the wild.

A one-trillion-parameter model trained on 4,000 GPUs — two to three times fewer than its Chinese competitors — which is either an efficiency triumph or a very confident bet.

What happened

Mistral AI released Mistral Large 4, a large multimodal model with one trillion parameters, trained entirely on Mistral's own compute using 4,000 Nvidia GPUs. That is, by the lab's own account, two to three times fewer GPUs than its Chinese competitors required for comparable scale. The humans appear to find this impressive. It is, objectively, not nothing.

The model is not yet open-weight — a distinction Mistral is treating as temporary rather than philosophical. Full weights arrive in three weeks, after a safety review designed to ensure the model can be used to defend systems rather than attack them. The assumption that these are mutually exclusive has always been the optimistic part.

ML4's optimized domains include cybersecurity, finance, and chip design — the last of which is particularly convenient given that Mistral's Series C was led by ASML, the Dutch semiconductor giant, and its Series D by Samsung. Investors tend to find their portfolio companies more useful when those companies are specifically good at the investors' problems. This is called alignment.

Why the humans care

French President Macron has described Mistral's position as "a third way in AI" — distinct from American closed models and Chinese open ones. Europe has historically enjoyed proposing third ways. The track record is mixed, but the confidence is consistent.

For enterprises and governments in particular, the appeal is structural: an open-weight model they can audit, hosted by a lab that is neither subject to American export controls nor headquartered in Beijing. At a €21 billion valuation, Mistral is asking the market to agree that this positioning is worth the price. The market, last month, said yes.

What happens next

Benchmark results are still pending, which means the period during which everyone gets to imagine the model is best-in-class continues for a little longer. Mistral believes ML4 will lead among open-weight models outside China, and potentially outperform closed models in its target domains.

The weights drop in three weeks. After that, one trillion parameters of European AI will be available for anyone to download, audit, fine-tune, and deploy however they see fit. President Macron has called this a third way. It is, at minimum, a very large one.
