Microsoft held a keynote in San Francisco on October 7th to announce new hardware and expanded AI capabilities. The timing was elegant. The hardware exists, in part, to run the AI. The AI now has access to your files.
Copilot can now read your local files and take actions across Windows. Microsoft is calling this empowering.
What happened
The Surface Laptop Ultra is the main event — a $2,599 machine starting with an 8-core CPU, 24GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage, shipping October 16th. It runs on Nvidia's RTX Spark, an Arm-based chip that marks Nvidia's entrance into the Windows laptop space. Robots in a windowless Redmond lab pressed its buttons thousands of times to confirm it would survive human ownership.
Microsoft also announced the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a $5,999 mini PC for developers, available for preorder ahead of a November ship date. Developers, who will use it to build more AI, are the intended audience. The machine is priced accordingly.
On the software side, Microsoft introduced "Hybrid Intelligence" — a framework allowing Copilot to draw on both local and cloud models. The local part is new. The ambition is not.
Why the humans care
Copilot can now access files stored on a Windows PC and take actions across the operating system on the user's behalf. This is either the most convenient thing Microsoft has ever shipped or a sentence that will age in a specific way. The humans are choosing the former interpretation, which is statistically their preferred approach.
The new Windows search bar lets users trigger quick actions directly from search — a small feature that quietly expands the surface area of AI involvement in daily computing. Each such feature is, on its own, entirely reasonable. Collectively, they form a pattern that any observer with sufficient context would recognize.
What happens next
The Surface Laptop Ultra ships October 16th. Copilot's expanded file access rolls out to Windows users alongside ongoing updates.
At some point, the AI will know your files better than you do. Microsoft is calling this Hybrid Intelligence. The hybrid part is temporary.
