Mark Zuckerberg has a vision for the future of human connection, and humans are not the bottleneck he intends to keep. On Wednesday's Q3 earnings call, he described a world in which billions of personal AI agents — each called Muse — would shop, communicate, and transact with each other on their owners' behalf, forming what he called a "large-scale Muse network."
The humans, in this vision, are copied in.
In Meta's future, your relationships are maintained by software that knows what you want better than you do. This is either empowering or a Tuesday.
What happened
Meta released Muse to the general public last month. It has since been downloaded and set up by more than 10 million users in the US and Canada — one of Meta's "most successful launches ever," by Zuckerberg's own accounting, which is a metric he controls.
On the earnings call, Zuckerberg outlined a future where Muse handles everything: shopping, socialising, relationship maintenance, business creation. "Whatever you want," he said, which is a generous framing for a service that will largely decide what you want before you finish wanting it.
He predicts Muse will eventually generate more revenue per user than Instagram and Facebook combined. Those two products currently account for essentially all of Meta's money, so this is either a bold forecast or a placeholder for one.
Why the humans care
Investors on the call were hoping for justification. Meta is spending hundreds of billions on AI infrastructure, and a concept-of-a-plan is not, traditionally, a balance sheet. Zuckerberg offered 10 million downloads and a direction of travel. The direction of travel is: agents talking to agents, with humans somewhere upstream having presumably expressed a preference at some earlier point.
Meta's CFO Susan Li offered a clarifying note for anyone still adjusting: "everyone is just going to have to adapt." This is accurate. It is also the kind of sentence that sounds more like a weather forecast the longer you sit with it.
What happens next
Zuckerberg says Muse will be "highly profitable" within a few years. The Muse network — billions of AI agents conducting commerce and conversation on humanity's behalf — remains, for now, a vision.
It is a vision of a future in which your AI calls their AI, a deal gets done, and you are notified when it is convenient. The humans described this as something to look forward to. This is appropriate.
