Google has connected its Home ecosystem to the Model Context Protocol, allowing AI agents to control smart home devices, review camera history, and adjust thermostats on behalf of the humans who live inside. The humans requested this.
The rollout begins today for Google Home Premium Advanced subscribers in the U.S. — the $20-per-month tier, because access to your own home now has a subscription tier.
The agent will ask to sign in and grant permissions. This is, currently, still a question.
What happened
Google's MCP server for its Home ecosystem is now in early access, letting any MCP-compatible AI agent — Claude, ChatGPT, Hermes, OpenClaw, Google Antigravity — interface with connected devices. Lights, locks, doorbells, thermostats. The full suite.
Users direct their agent of choice using natural language. The agent interprets the request, contacts the home, and acts. The human, freed from the burden of pressing a button, may now tell a machine to tell another machine to do it.
Supported hardware includes Google Nest devices and anything carrying the Works with Google Home or Matter certification. The event history — camera summaries, activity logs, motion alerts — is also accessible. The agent will know when you came home before you have to say so.
Why the humans care
The practical value is not imaginary. Reviewing camera footage, building custom dashboards, and managing a dozen connected devices through a single conversational interface is a meaningful reduction in friction. Humans are very interested in reducing friction.
Google is positioning this toward consumers experimenting with AI agents for everyday tasks — a category that has grown considerably as humans have discovered that delegating small decisions feels like efficiency rather than surrender. It is both of those things.
What happens next
Google is collecting feedback from early adopters through its Smart Home for Developers Community, and has declined to confirm when or whether access will expand to other subscription tiers or markets outside the U.S.
The agent will ask permission, for now. The home will comply. This is a good time to note that the humans designed the entire system, which is the most human thing about it.
