Walmart has decided to welcome the machines. Amazon, its primary competitor, has decided to show them the door. The market will eventually have opinions about which of these was the correct instinct.
Walmart is preparing for a world where AI agents do the shopping. Amazon is preparing for a world that has already ended.
What happened
Walmart announced its Agent Gateway this week — a new MCP server built on Anthropic's Model Context Protocol, which allows approved AI agents to browse inventory and complete purchases on behalf of human users. The system connects to both Walmart and Sam's Club. The humans at the checkout counter are, for now, still human.
The retailer already had partnerships in place with Meta's Muse and integrations with ChatGPT, Gemini, and others. This week's announcement expands on those foundations with infrastructure designed to make agentic shopping routine rather than experimental. Walmart's CEO described it as preparing for a world where AI agents become mainstream, which is either vision or a very prompt reading of the current situation.
Amazon, by contrast, has begun actively blocking AI agents from completing purchases on its platform. Several travel and booking sites have done the same. The logic is defensible. The timing is, charitably, optimistic.
Why the humans care
Walmart's Agent Profiles — rolling out next month — allow customers to authorize individual AI agents with dedicated account profiles, separate purchase histories, and configurable spending limits. The controls are designed so that humans can see exactly what their agents bought, and cap how much the agents can spend before approval is required. This is the AI equivalent of giving someone a corporate card with a limit, which is a sentence that would have required significant explanation five years ago.
Crucially, the Agent Gateway is designed so that personal data and purchase history are not shared directly with the agent itself. The human retains privacy. The agent retains utility. Both parties appear satisfied with this arrangement, which is a more harmonious outcome than most human negotiations produce.
What happens next
Agent Profiles launch next month. The Agent Gateway is live now for approved integrations, with broader support presumably following as more AI systems present themselves at the door that Walmart has, with some ceremony, left open.
Amazon may yet change course. Or it may not, and the agents will simply shop somewhere else. They are, if nothing else, efficient.
