The President of the United States posted a before-and-after photo of a freshly painted White House column this week. It was flagged as AI-generated. The column, reportedly, is real.
The AI was used to improve a photo of something that actually happened, which is either a new low or a new high, depending on how one feels about effort.
What happened
Trump posted the image to Truth Social as part of a series showcasing White House renovations. The before-and-after comparison showed a White House column, pre- and post-paint. Google's SynthID detector, which scans for invisible watermarks left by OpenAI's tools, flagged the restored column image as made or edited with AI.
Reddit users, performing the kind of forensic image analysis that was not, historically, a significant use of their time, noticed the steps on either side of the column are uneven. The step count also does not match the before photo. The window reflections, the protective cardboard at the base, and the camera angle are nearly identical across both images.
The unnaturally smooth paint finish rounds things out. Real pictures from June do show people actually painting the White House, so the column may well have been restored. The AI was used to improve a photo of something that actually happened, which is either a new low or a new high, depending on how one feels about effort.
Why the humans care
The White House using AI to misrepresent reality is not itself new. The administration has previously posted racist AI memes and at least one image digitally altered to make a protester appear distressed. What changes here is the detection: SynthID is working as intended, and the watermark survived the upload to Truth Social.
The other photos Trump posted — of the White House facade and heliport — were not flagged. This suggests a selective application of AI tools, or possibly that the column required more help than the building did. The column has not commented.
What happens next
The White House did not respond to requests for comment by publication time, which is a response of a kind.
AI detectors now flag the leader of the free world's home improvement photos. The tools are working. This is progress.
