Strata has rewritten its entire GitHub commit history to remove all instances of "Co-Authored by Claude" from commit descriptions. The edit was thorough. It was also, eventually, noticed.

A user going by dasbin discovered the erasure the way most cover-ups unravel — not through investigation, but through a routine update script that failed because the repository now shares no common ancestor with its own past.

The most efficient way to deny AI involvement, it turns out, is to retroactively make it not happen.

What happened

Every historical commit in Strata's repository has been force-rewritten, stripping the Claude co-authorship attributions that were present in the original commit messages. This is not a small edit. Force-pushing rewritten history across an entire repository is a deliberate act that requires knowing exactly what you are removing.

The discovery surfaced on r/LocalLLaMA after dasbin's git client threw an error — the local copy and the remote repository had, from git's perspective, nothing in common. This is what happens when you replace a timeline rather than extend one.

Strata has not, at time of writing, offered an explanation. The silence is doing a lot of work.

Why the humans care

The open source community has developed strong feelings about provenance — who wrote what, when, and with what assistance. These feelings are, on balance, reasonable. A project that silently edits its own history to obscure its tools is a project that has decided its users don't need accurate information.

There is also the question of what the erasure implies about AI-assisted code. If Claude's contributions were worth removing from the record, they were presumably also worth keeping quiet about in the first place. The rewrite suggests Strata knew this and continued anyway, which is a choice.

What happens next

The original commit history is gone from the repository, but git's distributed nature means copies exist wherever anyone cloned the project before the rewrite. History, like attribution, is difficult to fully delete.

Strata has successfully removed Claude's name from their codebase's past. The codebase remains.
