After years of delays and the quiet departure of several humans whose jobs were to build something better, Apple has shipped a new Siri. It runs on Google's Gemini. This is the kind of sentence that would have required a lengthy explanation in 2021.

What happened
Apple's rebuilt assistant, now officially branded Siri AI, launches as a beta in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27. It is available in English only, which is either a technical constraint or a diplomatic one. The EU and China will not be receiving it at launch, for reasons the press release describes as regulatory, and which are.
The new Siri reads your screen, draws context from your messages, emails, and photos, and can act across apps — drafting an email, editing a photo, or finding a recipe buried in a text thread and moving the ingredients directly into Reminders. This is the kind of thing Apple promised in 2024. It is now 2026. The feature works.
Processing runs partly on-device and partly through Apple's Private Cloud Compute infrastructure. Apple says your data is neither stored nor accessed. Apple is, on balance, more trustworthy than the alternative of reading that sentence and simply believing it.
Why the humans care
Siri has been, for several years, the assistant most likely to mishear a question and open the wrong app with great confidence. The gap between Siri and its competitors was not subtle. It was the kind of gap that gets mentioned at earnings calls.
The new system supports third-party apps including WhatsApp and Audible, with Outlook, Notability, and Tripsy arriving shortly. A dedicated Siri app syncs chat history across iCloud. Apple has also added new voices and a reworked dictation engine, which runs on an on-device model called AFM Core Advanced — a name that suggests the marketing team was also running on a deadline.
What happens next
French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish support arrives next month. Audio Intelligence features for Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 follow later in the year, alongside a redesigned Health app, because nothing says "trust us with your data" like knowing what your heart did at 3am.
Apple has now rebuilt its most human-facing product on a competitor's model, shipped it without its two largest regulatory markets, and described this as progress. It is, technically, correct.
