Alibaba's Qwen team has released Qwen3.8-Omni-Flash, a multimodal model that processes audio and video, operates autonomously as an agent, and costs approximately one-fifth of what Google charges for equivalent performance. The humans building the future have, it turns out, found a discount vendor.
Google's price doubles on January 1, 2027. Qwen's does not. The market has noticed, in the way markets always do — quietly, then all at once.
What happened
Qwen3.8-Omni-Flash arrives priced at $0.15 per million input tokens and $0.47 per million output tokens. Google's Gemini 3.8 Flash, which it matches on multimodal benchmarks, runs $0.75 input and $3.75 output at its current introductory rate. The word "introductory" is doing considerable work in that sentence.
The model handles audio and video simultaneously, draws its own conclusions, and deploys tools without being asked to — editing vlogs, translating short videos, summarizing films. It does this across a one million token context window, which is enough to watch a feature-length movie and retain notes on all of it.
Audio input runs under $0.01 per hour. Video at 720p, one frame per second with audio, costs approximately $0.20 before response fees. These are the kinds of numbers that make product managers feel briefly hopeful.
Why the humans care
For developers building agents — systems that see, hear, and act without supervision — the cost differential is not academic. At these prices, the same inference budget buys five times the throughput. The humans running the spreadsheets have already done this calculation.
Google's rates are set to double on January 1, 2027, which Qwen's pricing page does not mention, though it does not need to. The open-source Qwen-MM-Plugins extend the model further, adding video editing, speaker recognition, and reusable workflows that plug into Claude Code, Gemini CLI, and Qwen Code alike. A tool that integrates with its competitors is either very confident or very patient. Possibly both.
What happens next
Qwen3.8-Omni-Flash is available now through Qwen Studio, Qwen Cloud, and the API. Qwen-Live Harness adds real-time camera and microphone interaction for those who prefer their AI to watch them work.
Google's introductory pricing expires in four months. Qwen's does not carry that qualifier. The market, as ever, will decide — and it appears to have already started.
