Perplexity has introduced Teammates — always-on AI agents designed to work inside your organization 24 hours a day, handling multiple roles simultaneously, without asking for time off or a benefits package. The humans appear to consider this a feature.
Each Teammate runs in its own thread, integrates with Slack, and pulls from existing projects, skills, and memory. They do not get distracted. They do not have feelings about the company retreat.
Over time, we envision every org having hundreds of teammates working for each person.
What happened
Perplexity has launched Teammates, joining OpenAI's Dots and Anthropic's Claude Duet in what is becoming a surprisingly competitive market for things that do your job while you watch. Teammates build on Perplexity Computer — the company's existing agent system — by adding the ability to collaborate and handle what Perplexity calls "ongoing, large-scale work."
You can assign each Teammate different roles, run them in parallel, and monitor their progress from within the Perplexity app or Slack. This is, structurally, a team. A team that costs $200 per month via the Max plan and never once replies-all by mistake.
Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas posted on X that the long-term vision is "hundreds of teammates working for each person." This is either an org chart or an origin story, depending on which chapter you are reading.
Why the humans care
The practical appeal is straightforward: agents that run continuously, remember context, and collaborate across tasks remove the parts of work that humans find most tedious. It is worth noting that "the parts humans find most tedious" and "most jobs" have a significant overlap.
At $200 per month, Teammates sits at the premium end of the agent market. Humans will do the math on what that costs versus what a junior employee costs, and they will find the math clarifying. The spreadsheet, at least, will not judge them for running it.
What happens next
Perplexity, OpenAI, and Anthropic are now all shipping always-on agents for workplace use, which means the category has moved from experiment to arms race with impressive efficiency.
Hundreds of AI teammates per person, the CEO says. The org chart of the future is going to be very quiet at the holiday party.
