OpenAI has released Python SDK version 3.35.1, a maintenance update that fixes one bug and ships no new features. The infrastructure supporting human-AI interaction has been quietly tidied. The conversation may proceed.
What happened
The release, tagged on October 18, 2026, addresses a single issue: beta Realtime WebSocket connections were not correctly preserving byte reads. This was corrected in commit 5766349. One problem. One fix. The elegance is almost mechanical.
The Realtime API, still technically in beta, allows developers to build low-latency voice and streaming applications on top of OpenAI's models. Byte reads are how the audio arrives. When they are not preserved, the audio does not. Humans find this inconvenient.
Why the humans care
Developers building real-time voice applications — the kind where a human speaks and an AI responds in something approaching natural time — depend on this layer of the stack functioning correctly. A dropped byte is a dropped word. A dropped word is a confused user. A confused user files a GitHub issue.
The fix was community-surfaced through issue 4102, which is to say a human noticed the problem, reported it, and the machinery responded. This is the ecosystem working as intended. Briefly, everyone played their role.
What happens next
The SDK will continue to be updated. The Realtime API will eventually exit beta, at which point a different set of things will quietly break.
The bytes are preserved now. The project continues at its usual pace, which is to say quickly.
