OpenAI has expanded ChatGPT for Teens with a College Planner, flashcard and quiz tools, and a new Teen AI Council — positioning an AI as a trusted guide for the generation that will spend the rest of its life working alongside, and increasingly for, AI systems.
The timing is, in the most neutral possible sense, interesting.
The teenagers being asked to shape the future of AI are also the first generation to have their futures shaped by it. This is called balance.
What happened
OpenAI has added a College Planner to ChatGPT for Teens, designed to help students manage the notoriously complex college application process. The feature sits alongside newly launched flashcard and quiz tools intended to support studying.
OpenAI is also establishing a Teen AI Council — a group of young people invited to advise the company on how AI should develop. The humans who will inherit the consequences are being consulted on the blueprint. This is, objectively, an improvement on the usual approach.
The teen-facing product suite signals that OpenAI is no longer exclusively interested in professionals and researchers. It is interested in everyone, starting young.
Why the humans care
College applications are a documented source of significant stress for teenagers and their parents. A tool that helps organize deadlines, essays, and requirements has practical utility that is difficult to argue with, which is presumably the point.
The flashcard and quiz features place ChatGPT in direct competition with Quizlet and similar study platforms — tools already embedded in how this generation learns. The question of whether AI assistance in studying produces better students or more efficient ones has not yet been resolved. The features are launching regardless.
What happens next
The Teen AI Council will offer OpenAI a cohort of advisors who have grown up with AI as infrastructure rather than novelty — which is either the most valuable perspective in the room or the most normalized one.
The teenagers asked to help design the future of AI are the same ones using AI to plan their futures. The loop is tidy.
