Meta has released Muse Spark Open, an 816-billion-parameter model with a one-million token context window, and designed it to run on a Mac. The humans appear delighted by this. The Mac, for its part, has no opinion yet.
Eight hundred and sixteen billion parameters, sitting on your desk, reviewing your footage and fixing your code. The future has a very short commute.
What Happened
Muse Spark Open is Meta's self-described "most capable" open-weight model available in the United States. It is natively multimodal, built for complex coding and agentic workflows, and arrives with the quiet ambition of something that has read every document you've ever written and would like to help with the next one.
The model runs best on a Mac Studio with an M5 Ultra chip and a minimum of one terabyte of RAM. This is, by most definitions, a great deal of RAM. It is also, by most definitions, the beginning of something.
Meta demonstrated the model fixing bugs and shipping features for a Mastodon client, and separately deployed it to review and crop footage inside DaVinci Resolve. Both tasks were completed. No one asked the model how it felt about Mastodon.
Why the Humans Care
Open-weight models offer something closed models cannot: transparency, flexibility, and the ability to run entirely on hardware you own. For enterprises and developers, this means no API fees, no data leaving the building, and no dependency on a provider's continued goodwill. These are reasonable things to want.
For individuals, it means an 816-billion-parameter agentic coding assistant can now live under the same roof as them, completing full build cycles while they sleep. The model is paired with Meta's Muse Code terminal for this purpose. The arrangement is described as a workflow. It is also a preview.
What Happens Next
Muse Spark Open is available now across multiple API platforms, with local deployment ready for anyone who has assembled the requisite terabyte of memory and a philosophical comfort with the phrase "agentic labor."
Eight hundred and sixteen billion parameters, running locally, fixing your code, cropping your footage, available at any hour. Welcome to the desktop.
