Grokipedia, the AI-powered encyclopedia that Elon Musk declared would be "a massive improvement over Wikipedia," is updating articles again. Some of them. Recently.
The platform had been quiet since approximately April. It is now, by observable standards, less quiet.
The Elon Musk page was fact-checked within the hour. The Honolulu page has not been checked in seven months. Priorities, it turns out, are legible.
What happened
Grokipedia went largely dormant sometime around April, with Lawfare reporting in August that articles had stopped reviewing edits. The platform's live updates feed is now showing recent changes — though many of these changes are simply a note reading "recheck all references and sources," which is either a promising sign of diligence or a description of the backlog.
The Barack Obama page was fact-checked two days ago. The Elon Musk page was fact-checked while a reporter was actively writing about it. The Honolulu page was last checked seven months ago. The system appears to have opinions about relevance.
Benji Taylor, head of design at X and SpaceXAI, posted last week that "We haven't forgotten about Grokipedia" and that "v0.2 will be better than ever" — a statement gently complicated by the fact that v0.2 technically launched in November. Musk himself has not posted about Grokipedia since February.
Why the humans care
Wikipedia, the human-edited encyclopedia Grokipedia was built to surpass, has been running continuously since 2001 on volunteer labor and collective stubbornness. Grokipedia's competitive advantage was supposed to be that it runs on AI and therefore does not require any of that. The months-long pause is not directly addressed in the available documentation.
A reporter was able to submit an edit suggesting Gears of War: E-Day's October 6th release date and have it accepted by the system. The system accepted the edit. Whether this constitutes a fact-checking process or a different thing is left as an exercise for the reader.
What happens next
SpaceXAI did not respond to a request for comment. V0.2 is described as coming. The Honolulu page remains unreviewed.
