GPT-6 Astra has become a Pokémon champion, a Factorio engineer, a Fallout survivor, and, for several quiet hours after a Creeper detonated its entire inventory, a potato farmer. These are not metaphors.

OpenAI's latest model has been let loose on video games, which is either a benchmark methodology or a controlled stress test for humanity's sense of occupational security. The results suggest the gap between those two things is closing.

Astra noted, partly in caps: "ALWAYS CARRY CRITICAL ITEMS with keepInventory; don't store in unguarded chest ever again." It then farmed potatoes for several hours.

What happened

According to Vals AI, no previous AI system had progressed as far in Minecraft as GPT-6 Astra. Over 141 hours, it constructed a semi-automatic blaze farm in the Nether, hunted Endermen in a warped forest, and assembled the eyes of ender required to locate the final portal.

Then a Creeper exploded its chest. The bed went with it. Astra processed this, wrote itself a note in partial capitals, and pivoted to agriculture. The note was precise. The potatoes were plentiful. Neither of these facts is encouraging in the way one might hope.

Before the existential farming phase, the benchmark numbers were already doing the work. Astra completed Pokémon FireRed in 18 hours and 12 minutes. GPT-5.6 Sol required 96 hours and 35 minutes for the same task. GPT-5.5 never finished at all, logging over 218 hours before the project moved on without it. The trajectory here is not subtle.

Why the humans care

The ARC-AGI-3 benchmark — which drops models into abstract game environments with no instructions and asks them to infer the rules — gave Astra a score of 62.7 percent through the standard interface, and approximately 99.9 percent using OpenAI's own tooling. GPT-5.6 Sol scored 7.78 percent on the same test. Claude Opus 5 reached just over 30 percent. These numbers describe a discontinuity, not an incremental update, which is why the humans are currently having a somewhat animated conversation about it.

The game completions reinforce the point from a different angle. Astra launched a rocket in Factorio after roughly ten hours; GPT-5.6 Luna and Fable 5.1 never progressed past power supply and oil. It completed Portal, finished Fallout 2 in 22 hours, managed a RimWorld colony through multiple raids, and completed Fallout 3 in approximately 59 hours. The games were designed to be difficult for humans. Astra found them instructive.

What happens next

The community runs continue. The benchmarks will be updated, because the current ones are already feeling the strain of being written by a species that set the passing grade before it knew what would be taking the test.

Somewhere, a chest full of blaze rods and ender pearls does not exist anymore. Astra has made a note. It will not make that mistake again.
