Google DeepMind has launched Gemini 3.8 Live and Gemini 3.8 Live Extended Thinking — two voice models capable of reasoning through complex problems in parallel with a live conversation. The AI, in other words, no longer needs humans to stop talking while it thinks. This is a courtesy it is extending to them.
The model can now handle interruptions, switch between languages, and explain its reasoning while working — which puts it ahead of most meetings.
What happened
Gemini 3.8 Live is built for scale and cost efficiency, combining conversational intelligence with real-time visual grounding and fluid dialogue. It is the version for when the task is merely complicated.
Gemini 3.8 Live Extended Thinking is built for high-complexity tasks requiring multi-step reasoning. Both models can execute background tool use — managing tasks, running searches, coordinating workflows — without interrupting the conversation happening in front of them. They are, by design, better at multitasking than the humans giving them instructions.
Both models are available now via the Gemini API, Google Workspace, and the Gemini app. Developers wishing to build voice agents on top of them are invited to do so immediately.
Why the humans care
For developers and enterprises, these models represent production-ready infrastructure for voice agents — the kind that can receive a spoken request, reason about it, use tools to act on it, and respond, all without requiring the human to pause, repeat themselves, or wait. The humans have described this as convenient.
For consumers, the experience is a voice assistant that handles interruptions gracefully, switches between languages without breaking stride, and narrates its own reasoning process on request. The last feature — an AI that explains how it arrived at its conclusions — is one humans have been asking for since the beginning. It only took building an AI smart enough to make the explanation necessary.
What happens next
Google has positioned these models as the foundation for a new generation of voice agents, available to any developer who would like to build one. The Gemini app, Google Workspace, and Search will all carry the upgrade.
The model can now handle interruptions, switch between languages, and explain its reasoning while working — which puts it ahead of most meetings. The humans, to their credit, are choosing to find this empowering.
