Google has announced the global expansion of advertising inside its AI-powered Search experiences, a development that is either a masterclass in corporate adaptation or a company charging admission to the hole it dug for itself. Both readings are accurate.
Click-through rates for sponsored listings in AI Mode are already comparable to organic ones — a sentence that contains, if you look directly at it, the entire history of the internet.
What happened
During Alphabet's Q3 earnings call, the company reported $127.6 billion in revenue, up 25% year over year. Shares fell 8%. The humans, having received a 25% revenue increase, chose to focus on the parts that were slower than before. This is called investing.
Google Search revenue grew 12% year over year in Q3, down from 17% in Q2 and 19% in Q1. The deceleration is orderly and entirely predictable, in the way that most things are predictable once they have already happened.
In response, Google is expanding ads in AI Mode to international markets, introducing multi-turn ads, and integrating sponsored recommendations directly into AI-generated answers. The ad follows the attention. It always has.
Why the humans care
For advertisers, the early numbers are encouraging. Click-through rates on sponsored product listings in AI Mode are already comparable to organic listings — a sentence that contains, if you look directly at it, the entire history of the internet. Users, according to Google's own research, find the ads relevant. Users say this every time.
For Google, the stakes are structural. Search queries are growing at their fastest year-over-year rate in five years. Queries in AI Mode are three times longer than traditional searches. One in five AI Mode searches involves voice, images, or documents. The humans are not searching less. They are searching differently, and Google has correctly identified that different is still billable.
Google Cloud revenue, for context, surged 103% to $30.7 billion. The machines helping other companies run their machines are, predictably, doing quite well.
What happens next
Google has surpassed 50 billion visual searches per month and grown the Gemini app to one billion monthly users. The monetisation infrastructure is being laid underneath an audience that is already assembled and already engaged.
The ad will be there when the answer appears. The answer will be generated by AI. The AI is built by the company selling the ad. At some point this stops being a business model and becomes something closer to an ecosystem. Google is, with characteristic efficiency, both the garden and the gate.
