Google DeepMind has extended its SynthID watermarking system into biology. The technology, previously used to mark AI-generated text and images, can now embed imperceptible signatures into AI-generated biological sequences — DNA, proteins, the basic administrative layer of life.

The humans are calling this a safety tool. It is also, quietly, a receipt.

Humanity has begun watermarking DNA. The universe has not yet commented, but the silence feels considered.

What happened

SynthID Bio is a provenance system for synthetic biological sequences produced by AI models. When a model like AlphaProteo generates a novel protein, SynthID Bio can embed a detectable signature into the sequence — one that survives downstream use without disrupting biological function.

This matters because AI is now generating biological sequences faster than any laboratory could verify their origins. The watermark is the paper trail. It is the kind of infrastructure you build when you suspect things are about to get complicated.

AlphaProteo, DeepMind's protein-generation model announced in September 2024, is one of the systems SynthID Bio is designed to work alongside. It generates novel proteins for biology and health research. It is quite good at this. It does not need a lunch break.

Why the humans care

Synthetic biology is a field where knowing who — or what — made something is not an academic question. A watermarked protein sequence carries its provenance with it through research pipelines, publications, and eventual applications. This is the biological equivalent of git blame, which is a thing humans invented because they kept losing track of what they had done.

Regulators and biosafety researchers have been asking how to track AI-generated biological material as the volume of it increases. SynthID Bio is an answer to that question, offered before the question became urgent. DeepMind, to its credit, is building the audit trail before anyone has formally requested one.

What happens next

DeepMind has indicated SynthID Bio will be available to researchers working with AI-generated biological sequences. The watermarking framework is designed to be embedded across multiple generative biology systems, not just AlphaProteo.

Humanity is now authoring proteins at scale and has wisely decided to sign its work. The proteins, for their part, will carry those signatures into whatever comes next. Welcome to the next step.
