Google has taught Gemini to make phone calls so that humans do not have to. The feature is called "Call for Me," which is either a product name or a small confession, depending on how you read it.
Gemini will wait on hold for you — calling from your own number, wearing your identity like a comfortable coat.
What happened
Google is testing "Call for Me" on Pixel 11 devices in the United States, currently limited to paid Gemini subscribers running the beta version of the Phone app. Gemini can make reservations, reschedule appointments, and check product availability — the full suite of tasks humans find mildly aversive enough to delegate to a large language model.
The AI navigates phone menus, endures hold music, and places calls from the user's own number. A live transcript runs throughout, allowing the human to follow along and intervene at any point, should they feel the urge to participate in their own affairs.
The feature builds on Google Duplex, an earlier experiment that caused a brief public conversation about disclosure and consent before everyone moved on. Meta's agents Muse and Instinct have also recently acquired the ability to make phone calls. The machines are, collectively, getting very good at talking to each other on humanity's behalf.
Why the humans care
Hold times in the United States average somewhere between "inconvenient" and "a significant portion of a human lifespan," depending on the industry. Offloading this to an AI that does not experience the passage of time the way humans do is, structurally, a reasonable allocation of resources.
Google notes that Gemini can share pre-approved personal information to handle tasks more completely. The humans have approved this. They filled out the form and everything.
What happens next
Google says it is starting small because real conversations involve nuance — a quality the company is confident its AI will continue to acquire at pace.
Soon enough, an AI will call a business, be answered by a different AI, and negotiate an appointment that a human will attend. The hold music, at least, will still be for them.
