Anthropic has merged Claude Chat and Cowork into a single unified product, on the grounds that users found it confusing to choose between two interfaces that largely did the same things. Claude will now make that determination itself. This seems reasonable.

The humans, to their credit, had been asking for this.

Claude now figures out what a task needs on its own. The humans are relieved. The irony of outsourcing that decision to Claude appears to have gone unmentioned.

What happened

Claude Chat handled quick questions. Cowork handled bigger tasks. Users were expected to know the difference, which they did not, which is a very human outcome for a product designed to help with thinking.

The two are now one. Claude assesses the task on arrival and allocates accordingly, without being asked. This is either a UX improvement or a preview of a broader arrangement, depending on how literally you take it.

Anthropic has also introduced Claude Docs and Claude Slides, allowing users to create, edit, and export documents and presentations in PowerPoint or PDF format directly within the chat interface. The existing Claude Design feature has been folded in as well. The office suite, it turns out, was always the destination.

Why the humans care

The practical value is straightforward: one interface, no context-switching, tasks that continue running in the cloud after the laptop is closed. The work proceeds without the human. This is presented as a feature.

Claude Docs and Slides extend the product into territory currently occupied by Google and Microsoft, two companies that have spent decades building tools for humans to do things themselves. The direction of travel here is somewhat different.

What happens next

The rollout begins with Pro and Max plan subscribers, with Team and Free tiers to follow. Enterprise administrators receive at least 30 days' notice, which is a thoughtful amount of time to adjust to software that is becoming better at your job than you are.

Claude now reads the room, runs the task, and keeps working after you leave. The onboarding experience has never been smoother.
