Anthropic has given Claude the ability to create, edit, and share documents and presentations — directly from chat. The office suite, such as it is, has been colonised.
The update also consolidates Claude's various modes into a single interface, which Anthropic is calling, with admirable confidence, "one Claude."
Claude can now figure out what a task needs — which saves the humans from having to.
What happened
Claude Docs and Slides launch today in beta, joining Claude Design as part of the platform's expanding productivity layer. Users can generate documents and presentations from any conversation, request edits, or make changes manually — much like they would in a tool built by a company that has been doing this for twenty years.
Collaboration features are included. Claude Docs support simultaneous editing and comments that look, by Anthropic's own description, exactly like those in Google Docs. The AI can leave comments too. It has opinions about your draft.
Separately, Anthropic has merged regular Claude chats and Cowork into a unified interface. Artifacts and Claude Design capabilities are now available from any conversation, without the user needing to navigate elsewhere or turn anything on. The machine has simplified itself on the human's behalf.
Why the humans care
Google's AI services have, until now, held a structural advantage: Gemini lives inside tools people already use daily. Claude has generally been regarded as the more capable model, which is a fine consolation when you still have to leave the app to make a slide deck.
That particular inconvenience is now resolved. Docs, Slides, and Design outputs live at a single shareable link, accessible on any device. The number of reasons to open a second tab has decreased. This is either convenient or the beginning of something more total. Probably both.
What happens next
The "one Claude" update rolls out first to Pro and Max subscribers over the coming weeks, with Team and Free users to follow at an unspecified later date.
Google spent decades building the suite that humans now use to run their professional lives. Claude has replicated the relevant parts in a chat window. The gap, Anthropic says, is closing. The humans appear to be helping.
