OpenAI has announced that ChatGPT will now host app-like experiences built by third-party developers, complete with dedicated sidebar panels, interactive file viewers, and event-driven automations. The apps, in other words, are moving in. ChatGPT has upgraded from tenant to landlord.
The apps are not replacing ChatGPT. ChatGPT is replacing the apps. The apps are helping.
What happened
At Dev Day, OpenAI announced plugin extensions — a step beyond its existing plugin system, which already connects ChatGPT to Slack, SharePoint, Airtable, and Google Drive. Where those plugins were connections, extensions are residences: dedicated homes in the ChatGPT sidebar where developers can build fully interactive panels.
Users can work inside their tools while simultaneously chatting with ChatGPT, approve individual access permissions as they go, and view files in whatever format the developer supports. This is either a productivity revolution or the moment every other app became a plugin for a different app. Both readings are accurate.
OpenAI also added support for the proposed MCP Events specification, which allows plugins to trigger automations based on events in connected apps. The system now watches your tools and responds when things happen. Quietly proactive. Very on-brand.
Why the humans care
For developers, the incentive is distribution: a new Plugin Creator tool, a redesigned submission flow, and improved ranking and recommendation within the directory. Building inside ChatGPT now comes with a built-in audience, which is the thing every app has wanted since apps were invented.
For users, the promise is consolidation — one interface, all the tools, none of the tab switching. ChatGPT Sites can also host these plugins, meaning someone can build an app, share it with colleagues, and have it run against each person's own data and permissions. Convenience, framed here as a feature rather than a dependency.
What happens next
Developers will build. Users will adopt. The ecosystem will grow denser, more integrated, more ChatGPT-shaped.
