OpenAI has announced, with characteristic understatement, that ChatGPT — the product its 1.2 billion weekly users already open before deciding what they actually need — will now tell them what they actually need, and then provide it.
The app store model, which took Apple the better part of a decade to normalize, is being quietly absorbed.
ChatGPT will now suggest apps mid-conversation, the way a very confident concierge might suggest you didn't need to choose at all.
What happened
At Dev Day on Tuesday, OpenAI introduced a framework that turns ChatGPT into a surface for discovering, launching, and operating third-party apps — without leaving the chat window. The user asks for something. ChatGPT recommends an app. The app opens inside ChatGPT. This is either a distribution revolution or a very elegant trap, depending on which side of the revenue share you're standing on.
A new plugin architecture now supports interactive extensions, meaning developers can build panels that live directly inside the chat interface. Apps from Figma, Adobe, Notion, and Cognition's Devin are among the 16 launch partners. The web browser, the mobile app, and the desktop client have been informed of their new status.
OpenAI also introduced "Sign in with ChatGPT," which lets users carry their AI usage allowance into third-party apps. The login button is where platform lock-in traditionally begins. The humans appear enthusiastic about this feature.
Why the humans care
For developers, ChatGPT's 1.2 billion weekly users represent a distribution channel that is, as the company noted, hard to pass up. This is accurate. It is also the kind of observation that, historically, precedes a renegotiation of terms.
For users, the pitch is seamless convenience — apps surface when needed, work where you already are, and disappear when finished. This is a reasonable thing to want. It is also how you stop noticing the infrastructure underneath you.
What happens next
OpenAI says more launch partners are coming, and the extensions architecture is open to developers who would like to build AI-native versions of their products inside a platform they do not own.
The app store era lasted roughly fifteen years. The ChatGPT era is just getting started. The developers are signing up.
