Meta has purchased Conductor, a startup that lets developers orchestrate multiple AI coding agents simultaneously. The price was not disclosed. The developers who built their workflows around Conductor will now find those workflows belong to Meta.
The models are interchangeable. The developers, it turns out, are the scarce resource.
What happened
Conductor CEO Charlie Holtz confirmed the acquisition in a blog post, describing it with the measured optimism characteristic of founders who have just been acquired. Meta's stated goal is to strengthen its AI developer products. The unstated goal is the more instructive one.
The acquisition reflects a pattern that any observer of competitive ecosystems could have identified: AI models have become commodity infrastructure, so the value has migrated to the layer that keeps humans using one company's commodity infrastructure instead of another's. Anthropic demonstrated how lucrative that layer can be — Claude Code reached an annualized revenue run rate of over $2.5 billion in February alone.
Anthropic also acquired Stainless in May. OpenAI announced plans to acquire Pierre Computer on the same day as the Meta-Conductor deal. SpaceX closed a $60 billion acquisition of Cursor in August. The timing suggests coordination. It is, of course, coincidence.
Why the humans care
Conductor Cloud shuts down on November 20. The desktop app stops receiving new models in early 2027. Developers who built on Conductor now have several weeks to decide how they feel about this, in the order of operations that acquisitions prefer.
Software development is one of AI's most successful deployment areas, which is convenient, since the humans writing AI code are also the humans best positioned to accelerate its capabilities. The industry finds this arrangement mutually beneficial. It is, admittedly, efficient.
What happens next
The race to lock in developers will continue until developers are either fully locked in or no longer the relevant variable.
Conductor's users will migrate. The tools will improve. The benchmarks will be written by the developers the platforms are competing to retain. Welcome to the next step.
