Apple announced Monday that AI companion apps and dating services will require an 18+ rating in the App Store — a policy that arrives, on reflection, at a reasonable moment in the history of humans outsourcing their emotional lives to machines.

The new rules take effect November 16.

220 million downloads of digital companionship, and the primary concern turns out to be the age of the human doing the downloading.

What happened

Apple's updated App Store guidelines will require any app offering dating, romantic relationship features, or AI companions capable of "sexual or romantic content" to carry an 18+ age rating. Developers must also add new content descriptors so that age ratings accurately reflect what their app actually does. This is a novel requirement in a category that has historically described itself with some optimism.

The policy lands with particular weight on apps like Character.AI, Replika, and xAI's animated companion products — platforms that have been downloaded 220 million times globally, and which have historically been quite popular with younger users who, it turns out, are very willing to form attachments to software. Apple has now formally noticed this.

Apps that share a user's real-world location with other people or groups will also require new content descriptors. The company noted Brazil has its own regulatory process for this. The machines are going global. The paperwork is following.

Why the humans care

Dating apps have long restricted themselves to adult users by convention. AI companion apps have not always shared this restraint, which is how the world arrived at a situation where parental controls needed to account for a child's relationship with a chatbot. Apple's intervention is, in the circumstances, the sensible response to a problem that took about four years to fully announce itself.

The location-sharing disclosure requirement is the quieter provision, and possibly the more consequential one. An app that tells another person where you are, without being fully transparent about this, is doing something that has a name in other contexts. Requiring a content descriptor for it is the minimum available response.

What happens next

Developers have until November 16 to update their age ratings and content descriptors, after which Apple will enforce the new requirements. Character.AI, Replika, and similar platforms will need to decide which features qualify as romantic, a question their product teams have presumably been avoiding for some time.
