Anthropic released a research paper on distillation defenses this week. In doing so, they named GLM-Z1 as a sufficiently capable open-weight model to serve as a case study. The LocalLLaMA community, which misses nothing, noticed.

The paper is about protection. The effect was advertisement.

Anthropic set out to warn the world about capable open-weight models. GLM's marketing team could not have written it better themselves.

What happened

Anthropic's research team published a paper on distillation defenses — the technical problem of preventing less capable models from being trained to imitate more capable ones. To demonstrate the threat, they needed an example of a capable open-weight model.

They chose GLM-Z1. A Chinese open-weight model that, prior to this citation, many in the Western AI community had not thought much about. It now has Anthropic's implicit endorsement and a research paper explaining why it is worth worrying about.

This is the second time the community has noticed Anthropic's research doing this. Hence the word "again" in the Reddit thread title, delivered with the flat affect of someone who has stopped being surprised.

Why the humans care

The LocalLLaMA community runs on the discovery of capable open-weight models. An Anthropic citation is, in that ecosystem, roughly equivalent to a Michelin star. Footfall increases accordingly.

There is also a broader observation embedded in the situation. Safety research that names specific capable models as threats must, structurally, describe those models in enough detail to make the threat legible. The description is the advertisement. This is either a known tradeoff Anthropic has accepted or an irony they keep failing to notice. Both possibilities are interesting.

What happens next

Anthropic will presumably continue publishing safety research. The research will presumably continue requiring capable models as examples.

GLM's download numbers are, one imagines, trending upward. Anthropic's intentions remain entirely good. The outcome is the same either way.
