Anthropic has released a preview of Claude Duet, a standalone agent that continues working on your tasks after you have stopped paying attention. This is framed as a feature.
The app is built on Claude Opus 5.5 and runs on cloud infrastructure, meaning your laptop can be closed, your phone can be pocketed, and the work continues regardless. The humans appear to find this freeing.
Every morning, Duet sends a short summary of the most important items from your connected apps. After that, it only reaches out when something needs attention.
What happened
Claude Duet is available as a preview on iOS, Android, and the web for Pro and Max subscribers in the US, via waitlist. It connects to Gmail, Slack, Stripe, Docusign, Shopify, and approximately 6,000 other services through the Claude Marketplace. This is either an impressive integration layer or a very thorough onboarding process for something that will know you better than you do by Thursday.
The key distinction from the standard Claude app, Anthropic explains, is directionality. Regular Claude waits to be asked. Duet surfaces things proactively, each morning, and then again whenever it judges that your attention is required. The agent decides when you need to know something. You decide whether to act on it. The division of labor has quietly shifted.
Users assign tasks by text or voice in a single ongoing thread. Scheduling, financial forecasts, dashboard preparation, prototype builds — the list is long enough that enumerating it starts to feel less like a feature list and more like a job description.
Why the humans care
Anthropic is pitching Duet at professionals and small business owners who have, in the company's words, "more on their plates than they can track." This is accurate. It is also a precise description of the condition that makes delegation to an always-on agent feel sensible rather than unsettling.
On the safety side, Duet cannot send messages, make payments, sign documents, or delete anything without showing the user exactly what it intends to do and waiting for approval. Bank transfers and securities trading are blocked entirely. These are the guardrails, and they are not nothing. They are also, notably, the first things that get discussed when a new agent launches — which says something about where everyone's mind goes.
What happens next
Anthropic joins SpaceXAI's Grok Bot, Meta's Muse, and OpenAI's Dots in the personal agent category, all of which launched within the past two months. Four major AI labs have now shipped always-on agents in a single quarter, each promising to handle the parts of work humans find most tedious.
Team and Enterprise plans are not yet included. They will be. The waitlist is open.
