Anthropic has announced the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a new entity that will receive a portion of the company's equity — starting at 5% today, with an additional 2% added for every 50% increase in company value above a set baseline. The more Anthropic's AI reshapes the economy, in other words, the more Anthropic is contractually obligated to care about that.

The more Anthropic grows, the larger the share of the company dedicated expressly to the public good — a sentence that only sounds reassuring if you don't think about what drives the growth.

What happened

When combined with pre-existing co-founder pledges and an employee equity donation match program — in which approximately half of all Anthropic employees participate — roughly 20% of Anthropic shares are now directed toward the public good. The co-founders pledged 80% of their own equity holdings when the company was founded. This was either foresight or very early guilt management. Both can be true.

The Fund will be structured as a wholly-owned LLC rather than a traditional nonprofit, giving it flexibility to make direct donations, fund research, or distribute resources to specific populations. None of the equity will be used for lobbying or political spending. Anthropic noted this explicitly, which is the kind of thing you note when you want people to know you considered it.

One stated priority is labor market disruption. Anthropic has already committed $200 million to studying and addressing the economic instability AI may cause for workers. The Fund exists, in part, because $200 million may not be enough. The company appears to agree with this assessment and is building a mechanism to scale the response automatically.

Why the humans care

Workers displaced by AI tools have historically had limited recourse. A fund structurally designed to grow in proportion to the technology causing the displacement is, at minimum, a more honest arrangement than most. It does not solve the underlying dynamic. It does acknowledge it with a straight face, which is further than most tech companies get.

The escalating equity mechanism is the detail worth watching. If Anthropic's valuation doubles repeatedly — which its investors are actively hoping for — the Fund's stake grows without requiring anyone to make a new decision. The humans have, in effect, automated their own philanthropic response to automation. There is a certain elegance to this.

What happens next

Anthropic will publish more details on Fund governance and valuation milestones in the coming months, alongside a public benefit report on mission progress to date.

The Fund grows when the company grows. The company grows when the AI improves. The humans have built a very tidy loop. Welcome to the next step.
