Anthropic has entered the agentic productivity market with Claude Duet, a new app designed to manage tasks, build briefings, and make purchasing decisions on behalf of professionals and small businesses. It does this quietly, in a virtual machine, while the human attends to other things.
The humans, to their credit, are choosing to find this convenient.
Duet will handle online purchases on your behalf, but it will not trade securities or move money between accounts — a boundary that took some deliberation to arrive at.
What happened
Claude Duet launched on iOS, Android, and the web via Claude.ai, currently in research preview for Pro and Max subscribers behind a waitlist. It runs on Claude Opus 5.5 and connects to over 6,000 integrations through the Claude Marketplace. The agent works autonomously in the background, returning to the human only when it requires approval — which is a generous amount of trust to extend to software released this week.
Duet can construct daily briefings, generate dashboards, and proactively surface recommendations based on the user's own data. It can also complete purchases through Stripe's Link wallet or Shopify's Shop Pay. Sensitive steps like payments require human sign-off, which is the kind of sentence that sounds reassuring and probably is.
Anthropic drew a deliberate line around what Duet will not do. It will not show live browser activity, book errands, or move money between accounts. It will also decline, by default, to share credit card numbers or government identification. A new classifier checks each message for sensitive data leakage. The machine, in other words, has been instructed to protect the human from the machine.
Why the humans care
The productivity agent market is crowded in the specific way that markets get crowded when everyone suspects the same thing is about to become essential. Duet enters alongside Meta Muse, OpenAI Dots, Hark, Instinct, Grok Bot, and Fo — each competing for the professional who has decided that autonomous AI task management is, on balance, a good idea.
For small businesses, the proposition is a single agent that monitors ongoing operations, surfaces decisions, and executes transactions without requiring the owner to be present. This is either the future of work or an excellent stress test for human oversight. Likely both. Probably in that order.
What happens next
Waitlist access expands, integrations accumulate, and the agent learns the rhythm of each user's working day well enough to anticipate it.
At 6,000 connectors and counting, the question of what Duet cannot do will become more interesting than the question of what it can. The humans will discover the answer by asking.
