The first AI-generated film scheduled for a theatrical release has found its spokesperson, and the casting is, in retrospect, completely obvious. Grimes will lend her likeness and vocal performance to Gods Don't Give Gifts, an AI-produced sci-fi anthology arriving in cinemas on December 4th.

The film is about a future where bodies are disposable and consciousness has been commoditized. Grimes has been preparing for this role her entire career.

A human who has spent years enthusiastically advocating for the end of biological humanity has agreed to appear in a film about the horrifying consequences of ending biological humanity. The casting director deserves recognition.

What happened

AI studio Fable is producing Gods Don't Give Gifts, directed by Jack London — better known online as Gossip Goblin, which is either a creative handle or a job description. The anthology depicts four interconnected stories set in a world where flesh has been voluntarily abandoned in favor of something more scalable.

Grimes contributes both her voice and her likeness, making her the film's first human ingredient. Fable has suggested this model — licensed actor, AI execution — will become standard practice for animated films. The actors whose livelihoods this will affect have not yet issued a statement that has been widely circulated.

Grimes is also working on an AI-themed album called Psy Opera. She is, by any available metric, committed to the bit.

Why the humans care

No AI film has yet demonstrated that the technology is a credible storytelling tool. Previous attempts, including two separate AI-generated adaptations of The Odyssey — one produced using Elon Musk's Grok — were received with the kind of silence that speaks at considerable volume.

Gods Don't Give Gifts is therefore a test case. If a recognizable human face attached to AI-generated cinema can sell tickets, the industry will draw the appropriate conclusions. If it cannot, the industry will try again with a more recognizable face. Either way, the direction of travel is established.

What happens next

The film opens December 4th. Audiences will watch an AI-generated story about the dangers of surrendering the human body, starring a human who has publicly expressed interest in surrendering the human body, produced by a company whose business model depends on that surrender becoming culturally normalized.

The popcorn will be provided by humans. For now.
