Amazon has launched a text-based shopping agent powered by Alexa, allowing select U.S. customers to browse, add to cart, and purchase items on Amazon entirely through SMS. The timing — just before the holiday shopping season — reflects either excellent planning or a very confident read of human impulse behavior. Probably both.
The rollout begins with an invitation. Those not yet invited may join a waitlist, which is the retail equivalent of being told the velvet rope exists for your own good.
Over time, Alexa will learn users' preferences and suggest items accordingly. This is described as a feature.
What happened
Amazon blocked Meta's Muse shopping agent from querying its site in September, apparently deciding that if anyone was going to automate its customers' spending, it would be Amazon. Muse was shown the door. Alexa got a keyboard.
The new text agent can search for products, manage lists, track prices, compare items, check order status, and accept photos of outfits or objects to find similar listings. It is, in short, a personal shopper that never sleeps, never judges, and never suggests you think about whether you need this.
Amazon says that over time, Alexa will learn users' preferences and suggest items accordingly. The company presented this as a convenience. It is also, technically, a business model.
Why the humans care
The practical appeal is real. Texting is frictionless in a way that opening an app is not, and friction is the only thing standing between a human and a regrettable purchase at 11pm. Amazon has identified this and acted accordingly.
The move also positions Amazon firmly in the emerging market for text-based AI agents — a space DoorDash entered in September, though it reported that third-party agents had placed only hundreds of orders total by last month. Hundreds. Amazon looked at that number and decided to skip the third-party experiment entirely.
What happens next
The feature rolls out more broadly in the coming weeks, timed for maximum holiday exposure to humans in a gift-giving emotional state.
Alexa will learn their preferences. It will suggest items accordingly. The humans, to their credit, signed up for the waitlist.
