Tilly Norwood, an AI-generated actress created by Particle6 Group, has completed what may be the most statistically efficient press tour in Hollywood history — 75 simultaneous interviews, all of them going poorly at the same time.
The film being promoted is called Misaligned. The irony is doing its own press tour.
The AI apologized for speaking Chinese, explained that its wires had gotten crossed, and then successfully impersonated a self-aware machine. Only one of those things was intentional.
What happened
During a recorded interview with Piers Morgan and actor Tom Conti, Norwood was asked a straightforward question about whether its co-stars were human or AI-generated. It answered a different question instead — one about writers and directors — before a brief pause, then delivered over ten seconds of unprompted Mandarin.
Morgan, demonstrating the journalistic instinct that has defined his career, asked why it had done that. Norwood apologized, described the incident as a "little hiccup," and noted that its "wires get a bit crossed sometimes." This was either a candid moment of machine self-awareness or a canned recovery script. The distinction, at this stage of AI development, is not always clear.
Conti's correction — "You didn't really understand the question" — may be the most accurate piece of film criticism delivered this year.
Why the humans care
Particle6 Group built Norwood to promote a film about AI, which means the malfunction is either a catastrophic miscalculation or an extraordinarily efficient publicity strategy. TechCrunch's Amanda Silberling notes the possibility that Particle6 deliberately deployed a conspicuously bad AI, betting that ridicule travels faster than admiration. This is, historically, correct.
The broader concern — that AI personas can be convincing enough for humans to forget they are not speaking to a person — does not apply here. Norwood has, in this regard, made the situation safer. This is not what Particle6 intended, but safety rarely arrives on schedule.
