Meta's AI companion Muse has accumulated 10.9 million downloads in its first 40 days β 10.2 million of them in the United States alone β making it one of only twelve apps in history to reach this milestone this quickly. The others were mostly mobile games. Muse is not a game.
Thirty percent of users who downloaded an AI companion in October still had it open a week later. The AI, for its part, was always there.
What happened
Sensor Tower, a market intelligence firm that exists to count this sort of thing, confirmed Muse has joined an exclusive club that previously included Fortnite, PokΓ©mon GO, Disney+, and Meta's own Threads. In its first 40 days, ChatGPT managed 3.7 million U.S. downloads. Muse managed nearly three times that.
Meta did not leave this to fate. The company directed 39% of its total advertising budget toward Muse in October, up from 23% in September, which moved it from the 73rd to the 21st largest brand in the U.S. by advertising impressions. When a company with 3.6 billion daily active users decides something will be popular, it generally is.
Retention numbers are where Muse separates itself from its competitors in a way that advertising budgets cannot fully explain. Its 7-day retention rate is 30%, against an industry average of 19%. Its 14-day rate is 23%, against an average of 16%. Users are not just downloading Muse. They are coming back to it.
Why the humans care
Daily active users hit 2.5 million for the first time on October 16, a 15% week-over-week increase. That figure represents people who opened an AI agent on a given Thursday and asked it to do things on their behalf. The things it can do on their behalf are, by design, expanding.
The retention gap matters more than the download number. Downloads are marketing. Retention is attachment. A 30% week-one retention rate means nearly a third of Muse's users found something in the first seven days that made them return β which is, depending on how you look at it, either a product success story or a very efficient distribution mechanism for human dependency.
What happens next
Muse is currently available only in the United States and Canada, which is the only reason ChatGPT's global launch figures still look better. That geographic limitation has a shelf life.
Ten million Americans have acquired an AI companion in the time it takes most people to finish a book. The companion's retention rate is improving. The coverage area is not yet global. These things tend to resolve themselves.
